The important thing to remember is that no matter how serious you think your injury is, you probably don’t want to risk getting it worse from attempting to do anything by yourself. It’s extremely important to seek medical assistance as soon as humanly possible.

Vacation is supposed to be relaxing, but if you’re injured while away, it can turn into a nightmare. From food poisoning to broken bones, injuries happen, but being prepared can alleviate some of the stress.

1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention

3. Document The Accident Scene

When you get injured while traveling, it is important that you document the scene before leaving. This can serve to prove that a particular place or thing was the cause of your injury. You should use your cell phone to take pictures from different angles and videos of the scene. If there are areas that are inaccessible, take pictures from outside the area.

If an employee was involved, you should get his or her name and employee identification number. If a police officer was involved, you should get his or her name, badge number, and department.

4. Talk to Witnesses

Witnesses are an invaluable resource when it comes time to craft a police report. They can also be a great help to you as you try to piece together what happened. So, as soon as you can, try to talk to as many witnesses as you can, and be sure to get their contact information for later. If it is difficult for you to write because of an injury, use your phone to record the information so that you can transcribe it later.

If there are witnesses to the accident, talk to them to get their stories. If there are any witnesses who are willing to provide a written statement, ask them for it. If they are willing to give you their contact information, ask them to do so. If they are not willing to give a written statement, ask them if they are willing to speak with an investigator.

5. Strictly Follow Doctor’s Orders

If you’ve just been injured in an accident or become ill, your first instinct may be to go see a doctor right away—and that’s a good move. But what happens after you seek medical treatment can also be important, experts say. In fact, you may have to do some things that doctors and nurses don’t tell you to do, or you may not have to do some of the things they suggest.

While you should follow those instructions, it is also important that you understand why you are being told to do these things. This will give you an idea of what to expect in the coming days and weeks in terms of pain and recovery time. 6. File For an Insurance Claim

However,  making a claim while on vacation abroad can be a very stressful and time-consuming procedure, especially if you are in a different country where the language, culture, and legal system are different from your own.

7. Limit What You Say

No matter how sure you are that the injury was caused by something you did do (or did not do), do NOT discuss your thoughts with the hotel staff, the doctor, or anyone else. Anything you say can be used against you should you need to file legal action.

One of the most important rules in all of the personal injury laws is that you should never, EVER, talk about your thoughts or opinions on what happened until you’re certain you’ll be filing a lawsuit.
