Solar lighting trouble shooting tips

Over time, rain, dust, or other debris can leave a dirty film on the solar panel, making the solar panel less efficient and unable to absorb sunlight during the day. Remove debris with a damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or rough material to clean the solar panel, this may scratch the surface and reduce performance.
Make sure the solar panel is in direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. Over time, overgrown bushes or other objects may appear in the area where you placed the lighting fixtures, casting a shadow on the solar panel, preventing the light from fully charging. Try to move the light to a different location; it may be as little as a few feet. A good way to test your sunlight is to put it in a nice, sunny place for 2 days. If the light comes on, it means that the previous location did not receive full sunlight.
Make sure it’s dark enough at night. As strange as it sounds, it is the level of darkness that determines whether sunlight works or not. Solar light relies on a sensor to detect the level of darkness; if not dark enough, the light will not turn on automatically. This could be due to a new street lamp in the area, or perhaps due to the porch lighting. A good way to test this is to put something on the solar panel (usually this is where the sensor is located). If a light comes on, it is a good sign that there is some kind of light nearby affecting the sensor. Move the light to a different location, away from any other light source.
Could it be the battery? Solar lights are battery operated at night, if there is a battery problem, your light will not turn on at night. Examine the battery compartment to make sure the battery is securely and correctly installed. The battery compartment is usually marked with (+) and (-) to check the correct direction. If the compartment is unmarked, a general rule of thumb is that the smooth / flat end of the battery must be in contact with the spring. The “handle” end of the battery should touch the smooth / flat clip in the battery compartment.
Make sure the battery compartment is not corroded. If you find a white or green substance on the connectors, clean them with a small brush. You can also use the tip of an eraser to remove stubborn particles, be sure to remove any remaining eraser before reinstalling the battery. Also clean the ends of the battery or replace the battery. NOTE. When cleaning the battery compartment, be especially careful with the circuit board and any wiring.
Are the batteries bad? The rechargeable batteries that are supplied in solar lights from the factory can last only 6-24 months. A good way to test a battery is to put the battery in a charger and see if it charges. If you do not have a charger, you can replace the battery with a standard battery (for testing only). Then cover the solar panel, if the light comes on, the batteries need to be replaced. Most solar panels on the market today use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. Nickel cadmium batteries can be found at just about any hardware store. NEVER replace batteries with regular alkaline batteries, as they can destroy the photovoltaic cells of the luminaire.
Winter or rainy months can also affect how sunlight works. If you have a few days in cloudy weather, the batteries will not fully charge, which can prevent your headlights from working or staying on for a long time at night. After this builds up, be sure to give the headlights at least 2 full sunny days to recharge the battery.
